Sensory Processing Disorder

I came across this article today when I was google-ing "sensory processing disorder". It was back in 2007 but gave some more insight on the subject none the less. Thanks for looking!

What do you want for Christmas?

Its so fun this year with the age Gregory is at with it being Christmas time and all. He can feel the excitement in the air and is constantly saying "Christmas is coming!". So fun. I asked him what he wants for Christmas this year . . . knowing that he doesn't really understand the whole idea of it yet . . . and his answer was, "Lets think . . . um . . . chocolate chips!!!!". He can have the Semi Sweet Ghiradelli Chocolate Chips. So cute! Might throw them in his stocking. I know this will not be the response in years to come.  Ü

Thanksgiving

I am so thankful for you Gregory! Thanksgiving what spent wednesday night with Papo and Mimi. He had steak, bread, green beans and graham crackers with frosting on them. Thursday was spent with daddy's side of the family. Bobby made him his own cornish game hen. He ate that and his rhodes roll with great ease. Had to make him eat his jello salad. Horrible parents, aren't we? I think its the whole texture thing he had to get used too. There were brussel sprouts on his plate and salad which he ate none. Big shocker. Auntie brought the kids "kid wine" a.k.a. sparkling cider. Gregory doesn't eat applese yet so she brought him up some sparkling pink grapefruit juice! yum! No pies for this guy. He wanted a bowl (or more) of fruit loops! Happy Thanksgiving!

Tick or treat

What does a cute fireman with Galactosemia do on Halloween? Trick or Treating with his cousins of course! Then mommy and daddy go through the candy to give him what he is able to have! Here are some of the candies he can have!

Chicken Sam-which

Every wednesday Gregory goes to Bobby's house for a Bobby Day. Most days she makes him her famous Chicken Sandwhiches. Canned chicken with mayo on saltines! He looks foward to these sandwhiches. Its one of the few go to meals that he can have. I've made it for him from time to time. Here he is enjoying them!

No news is good news

I haven't posted in awhile. I haven't had any issues to deal with. Nothing really going on. Nothing beneficial to post in hopes of helping others. That all being said, Gregory seems to be doing really great these days. Not to say he doesn't have his days but lately he is just more centered and better able to just function normally.

What has changed you asked? I think mainly his O.T. And then just everyone in his life having a better understanding of him and us all working together.

So, here's to Gregory! And his adorable school picture I just had to show you !

O.T.

Gregory had his 2nd O.T. session today. We really love it there and he gets to work with Miss. Sara. She's great. Its so great to sit there and know for a full hour his body is getting everything it wants and needs! Such a blessing! I finally feel like we are doing something to help him.

Today she had him sit on this rectangle swing and do puzzles while she pushed him back and forth. Then she set up an obstacle course for him. He had to jump on the trampoline 5 times, then walk on "gum drops" which are like half sphere type things on the ground that have pokey things. (Side note: She pointed out to me when he was done how he wasn't walking on his toes. Something with his sensory nerves in his feet made them want to walk correctly or something like that.) Then he picked up a puzzle piece, crawled through a tunnel, onto a huge bean bag and then put the puzzle piece on the puzzle! So fun!

Then he played in the beans and worked on fine motor skills all while getting input and listening to music therapy. She introduced him to the "brush" where you brush the body. You do it at least 3 times a day and helps all his sensory nerve receptors. We'll do it again next week and then I get to take it home and do it with him!

The hour went by fast and it was so fun!

So, remember last week Gregory's teacher threaten him with having to call me and take him home? And it worked? Well, Monday I did have to go get him . . . she had to follow through . . . he wasn't behaving . . . called me around 9:00 . . . school starts at 8:30. So, home we went . . .thought I'd try and do some sensory stuff with him to get all his heeby jeebys out. We made playdough. He loved it! Until he through a piece on the floor and it took 20 minutes for him to obey me to pick it up. There is more to that story. But lets just leave it at that for now.

One of my most favorite things

So, Gregory goes through these phases of itiching dry skin and then he's fine. He's been fine all summer and now the dry skin is back. Now he's big enough to do the lotion all by himself which is one of my most favorite things to watch and see right now. Ü

Oh boy!

This is how you fall asleep when Bobby puts you down for a nap and you poop your pants and don't know what to do and are so tired so you fall asleep standing up so you don't have to lay in your poop. The alternative would be to go get Bobby to change you. Or better yet, go in the potty. Ü

Thank you.

Dear God,
Thank you for giving me Gregory. Not only for obvious reasons, but because I can tell you are doing a work in me. You gave me Gregory to make the woman you created me to be. For that I am so blessed to have Gregory.

Dear Gregory,
I love you so much more then you will ever know! What would I do with out you? You have made me a better person. Thank you. It is an honor to be your mother.

Ugh!

So today my mommy's heart is a little weary. I think I do  pretty good for the most part . . . not letting Gregory's things get to me . . . I feel bad saying that because our problems could be so much worse . . . but every once in awhile I feel sad or want to have a pitty party for myself. The 2 main things that get me down are the "alone-ness" of all this if thats even a word. And Gregory not being known as the "nice" kid.

By "alone-ness" I mean . . . so many things . . . to how much certain foods are just apart of living life and certain foods define us as humans and define our experiences and memories and Gregory won't have those. I know he doesn't know any different. Not being able to just give him anything and experience all those fun first tastes with him. To never know the taste of an oreo. And then just how that singles him out in life. And in situations. I dunno. I'm just rambeling.

By the other I mean . . . I can deal with the "different kid" or the "weird kid" or the "slow kid". But my personality has a hard time dealing with having the "mean kid". I know kids will be kids . . . . but more than a handful of times being at Gregory's school a kid will go to their parent and say, "Thats Gregory. He's mean." or the parent will tell me how their child goes home and talks about how Gregory needs to be more nice. This in its self is crazy to me because I can't even imagine Gregory have the vocabular ability to even express that to me at home about a kid in his class that just reminds me how low his vocab is. Ugh! Anyways, this too shall pass. It can only get better right? Yesterday his teacher almost had to call me to come get him he was behaving so bad. Today he was great! I am a happy mommy.

Thanks for listening . . . who ever you are.

Silly Faces

I guess no news is good news. Nothing new has been going on with Gregory lately but felt the need to post something. Here he is practicing "silly faces" after mommy showed him how. He does start this thursday a weekly acting type class offered at his school. I'll let you know how it goes. Ü
